Origin: The coasts of southern and south-eastern Europe, it can also be found in the north of Ireland.
Typical of the Mediterranean.
An ornamental shrub commonly used in gardening owing to the beauty of its foliage, flowers and fruit. It has dark green, glossy leaves, while its fruit is red with yellowish flesh. The fruit is edible, and takes a year to mature.
It needs a location with full sun or partial shade, and does best in areas that are not too cold. It grows best in sites with abundant water, but with moderate irrigation and well-drained soils. It can't stand waterlogged areas.
